Ten Steps that will remove your Limitations and Become Competent ~

This is the overview of what you can become and you will experience life without limitations!

step

First Step: Learn from the basics, and then bring yourself to speed up to maximum level. Like the illustrated ladder of learning for someone who likes to become Communicative Competent.

Second Step: Distinguish yourself with the learning of proper and correct vocabulary. Use them efficiently at any location, event, or when you are sharing information with someone regardless of his/her background.

Third Step: Take time to practice with other people. There are many venues of learning and practicing.  The following is an example of the venue for practice. Some are free and some are paid. You get the value of what you pay for and the experience when it is given free.

Fourth Step: Understand the implications and sociological meanings of words, phrases, idiomatic expressions, slangs or the so called ‘lingua-franca’ By knowing when and where to say properly will create an impression of credibility among the people you share your ideas.
culture - eye contact JPG

Fifth Step: When unsure, find someone who is experienced to help you. There is no better Coach than someone who is experienced in many areas of concern. Thousands of information is available in the internet, but when you cannot tell the difference of what is correct and which one is wrong, then the best advice is to seek the guidance of a Coach or a Teacher.  Either will tell you which is the best.

Sixth Step: When you begin grasping greater responsibilities, there is an expectation that you will demonstrate competence in leadership and management of an organization that is consist of people, activities, situations, revenues, communication and external factors. Being a communicator, you need the competency as illustrated in the following image. If you don’t have one, hire a Coach who will help you obtain those critical knowledge.

Seventh Step:  What is your readiness to make a difference?  Exceptional? or just a so so employee?  or just be a Yes, Sir!  You need to be able to answer eloquently those challenging interview questions when you are facing a panel of people. You need to sell your capabilities in order to gain growth and advancement.

Eight Step: Leading is not a joke. It requires strategic mindset to make the balance of the organizational fulcrum. When you aspire to be a good boss or great boss, you must learn unequivocal knowledge and expertise in the areas shown below. In that way, you are indeed someone to be respected within an organization.  If your aspiration is being a mediocre manager – don’t bother to learn these.

Ninth Step: Demonstrative communicative competency is a must when you aspire to be standing before an audience.  If you don’t know how? Hire a Coach to teach you the proper techniques and mechanics of doing professionally. Don’t be misled with many online information. Delivery of information like the ones shown below is imperative.
presenting ideas & information JPG

Tenth Step: There is nothing more eloquent to listen, attend someone’s talks than an individual who can illustrate these three important characteristics of a Communicator. Your opportunity is limitless when you have these competency, confidence and ability to articulate. Please note this is not a skill – what is required is a competency. The combination of knowledge, techniques, linguistic proficiency, cultural depth, and business acumen.

The 64 dollar question is, “Have you gone through all the 10 steps? If not, which one do you need to accomplish?  Can you call yourself  ’Competent’ and can demonstrate the step 10?”  Ideas N Conversations will be glad to help you with your difficulties.

We like to hear from you. As always every comment that you share will be appreciated.

Non-verbal versus Verbal Language

Quiz 1:

  • How significant is Non-verbal body language compared to verbal language forms?
You are welcome to share us your insights at the space provided below ...

Perspectives:
Generally speaking, "Communication is the use of messages to produce meaning within and across a variety of contexts, cultures, methods and media" - this description was provided by Association for Communication Administration.

That description was providing us a knowledge that communication is a method or a tool that will transfer ideas and meanings through different media with another individual or groups.

People with different backgrounds in terms of culture, linguistic competencies, or perhaps natural differences demonstrate different ways in communicating their ideas and will also understand these ideas differently with meanings. Whether or not such communication was illustrated in either verbal or non-verbal.

Verbal communication requires sound forms of the language to communicate specific information. In today's technological age, there are many different forms to utilize in order to transfer those ideas verbally through various media.

On the other hand, Non-verbal communication provides a different angle of meaning when communicating an idea. Depending on the setting of the communication process, specifically country, cultural, physio-linguistics and other factors. There are ambiguities of non-verbal communication, particularly focused on who is communicating ideas and who are receiving the information that is being communicated. Body language play an important role when it comes of non-verbal communication. Are there tools of today that illustrate non-verbal communication?  Yes, there are ... it is a matter of identifying these around you. They speak louder than words and the meanings they provide are strong and equally vital.

As always, we like to hear from you.

Learning ESL (English as a Second Language) with Conversational Focus

ESL is known to be the language that is needed by new migrants to a country where English is a primary language.  Speakers of non-English languages are encouraged to learn English as their second language. This will provide them the ability to communicate with other people in the Englis-speaking country. Especially when doing daily living activities.

Expectations from Learning ESL:
ESL / ESOL is a subset of Applied Linguistics. It covers utterances, writing, reading, grammar, comprehension and cultural implications. The main objective is to learn and acquire English proficiency in order to use English like the way native speakers do. The results of classes are expected that Learner must be able to demonstrate adequate control and use of English when communicating in either verbal or written. The Learner must have acquired adequate words or vocabulary, expressions and cultural implications of the language use at a given setting.

An excellent program to enroll with is to learn English language within 6 weeks that are conducted by experienced Language Trainers. When you have enrolled in ESL class for over a continued period of time today and did not learn to speak better and unable to control your thoughts and ideas. Your class was not based on your identified deficiencies for learning.

The acquired proficiency level in all areas such as reading, writing, speaking, comprehension and cultural implications must be measured effectively. The proficiency results must be demonstrated during conversations of topics relating to any day-to-day living or by sharing unique and informative ideas that illustrate meaningful thoughts and meanings with another individual. It will be useful in business environments as well.

To learn more about improving your English language proficiency in either ESL or Conversational English, please contact us: info@ideasnconversations.com

Becoming Proficient with English Communication - Experienced Professionals can help

Each individual has strengths and weaknesses especially when relating to language proficiency or technical skills. Recognizing the deficiency within oneself will highlight your strengths to overcome the areas where development is needed. The extra effort to learn ways, ideas, techniques and understand these areas will increase your skills as well as competencies.

However, it is not easy to self-direct your  own learning. In this aspect, it is also a fact that each one has a different way of learning abilities.

The following scenarios show examples of different learning and coaching situations. Perhaps, one of them may be familiar or related to your own learning needs.

Scenario #1: Jovit - Independent English Learning
Jovit enjoys learning independently. He does not need a lot of help when learning English because he likes self discovery. Every now and then, he needs a Coach to help him understand areas that confuses him. He likes to confirm his thoughts and ideas whether they are correct or wrong. So he will work with his personal Coach to correct his deficiencies and explain the areas where he gets confused. Jovit's coach will be guiding him only as needed. However, the Coach will make sure that all learning are relevant, evaluate Jovit's progress in gaining proficiency,  reinforce learning with new techniques to increase higher level of his proficiency. Jovit's coach will continue helping him to acquire the highest level of proficiency without the help of a Coach in the future.

Scenario #2: Akila - Excel, Powerpoint, Word Programs for Office
Akila was hired to work as an office manager at small office. However she never had an experience in using Microsoft Powerpoint and Excel. She needed some training and learn how to use these in order to support the departments that need documentations, reports, presentations, and spreadsheets. Akila hired her Coach who can help her to gain mastery in using these important office software programs. Her Coach will show her  hands-on activities that will create her immersion to actual learning while she is at work. In that way, her lessons support her immediate needs when doing her job. The progress of her learning are demonstrated by her ability to create documentations based on specific use or integrated use of all three software programs.

Scenrio #3: Shengha - English as a Second Language
Shengha needs someone who will guide and teach her all the areas that she will need to learn ESL (English as a Second Language). Unlike Jovit, she does not have the self confidence in discovering her learning abilities. Shengha's Coach will direct her learning on a daily basis. The coach will explain all areas and will facilitate the progressive learning process of Shengha until she will understand all areas and gain self confidence to demonstrate her proficiency.

Scenrio #4: Antonio, Engineer - Conversational English
Antonio works as an Engineer at a global company. He speaks limited English and cannot explain his ideas with his co-workers. His manager suggested he will learn Conversational English so he can participate in many discussions at work. Because Antonio works at day time, he needs a Coach who can help him during a convenient time for evening classes or weekend classes. The Coach of Antonio will mix topic lessons that are useful  to his daily transactional living outside work and the many activities that he will be doing at his workplace. Antonio's progress will be observed based on his ability to use what he learned with his Coach and use it immediately at work.

Scenario #5: Helga - English Expressions for social and work environments
Helga enjoys working with her co-workers. However, she always gets confused with the different expressions she heard everyday from her co-workers. Often times, when she goes to the market and or at groceries, she finds it difficulty to understand alot of expressions used by many people. Helga gets a Coach who will help her gain understanding and learn how to use lingua franca, idiomatic expressions and other phrases that will be useful for both her work and in the community. Her coach will give her exercises that will give her the ability to practice and get immersed to both business and informal culture where many simple and complex expressions are being used.

Scenario #6: Hiroki - English Vocabulary Enrichment
Hiroki is struggling in using the right word or vocabulary. He is frustrated when he cannot express himself among friends, and acquaintances. He memorizes alot of vocabulary but doesn't know how to use them at properly. Hiroshi believes he likes to learn more vocabulary and use them effectively. He works with a Coach who can assist him to learn in using the words with correct situations, manner and time. Hiroki's lessons will be customized and that his progress will be evaluated by his Coach regularly. He will demonstrate his knowledge and proficiency in using English works correctly through speaking, writing and discussing topics among friends, family, acquaintance and co-workers.

Recommendation:
The best way to approach learning effectively is by taking necessary steps in finding experienced coach and trainer on the areas of your target subject matter.

Excellent Language Trainers and Coaches were trained professionally. They learned many approaches, techniques as well as complex cultural background of students from across the globe. The most important background of the Coach and or Trainer is the experience and qualification in the field.

Avoid stereotypes when selecting your Coach for your learning. Accents, color of skin and hair, and cultural heritage are not the essential aspect when learning. Learning with an experienced coach, trainer or teacher is the most valuable part of it. Because what is guaranteed as results from these types of individuals are the proficiency that you will gain from them.

Assessing your current needs by experienced Coach or Trainer will make your learning experience become effective and the progressive results will be impactful to your abilities.
