English Competency is required to become a Lawful US Resident then Earn US Citizenship

Speaking the English language and competency of US Civics are requirements to earn Lawful US Permanent Residency and US Citizenship per the proposed Reform of the  Comprehensive US Immigration Laws announced by President Barack Obama when he spoke last January 29, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The following clause appeared in the Fact Sheet of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform where it stated the language requirement for anyone who will decide to become a Lawful US Resident:

"Create strict requirements to qualify for lawful permanent resident status.  Those applying for green cards must learn English and U.S. civics.  As under current law, five years after receiving a green card, individuals will be eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship like every other legal permanent resident."

What this means to Non-English Speaking Individual?
For those individuals who like to go and live in United States, whether to work or join their family members who lawfully earned their US Residency and or Citizenship; one thing is very important. Demonstrate speaking proficiency and communicate with competence in English.

Other countries such as Australia, Canada and United Kingdom require English Proficiency for those who go and work there including those who will immigrate to live there.

Another important piece of the Proposed Immigration Reform is the inclusion of Family Members;

"Keep Families Together. The proposal seeks to eliminate existing backlogs in the family-sponsored immigration system by recapturing unused visas and temporarily increasing annual visa numbers.  The proposal also raises existing annual country caps from 7 percent to 15 percent for the family-sponsored immigration system.   It also treats same-sex families as families by giving U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents the ability to seek a visa on the basis of a permanent relationship with a same-sex partner. The proposal also revises current unlawful presence bars and provides broader discretion to waive bars in cases of hardship."

What this means to Non-English Speakers with Family living in the United States?
Demonstrate speaking proficiency and communicate with competence in English.

Many US organizations sponsor Employment Visas for qualified Specialty Occupation, filled by foreigners with special education and technical expertise. Entrepreneurs, Graduate or College Students in US Universities and other specialized field qualify to reunite with their family living abroad under the New Immigration Reform.

Each family member (spouses and children) who will join a Lawful US Resident in the United States must demonstrate competencies in speaking or communicating in English (verbal or non-verbal). It will be convenient to integrate in the American society when one demonstrates acceptable proficiency level in the English language.

For anyone who is already living in the United States but do nor demonstrate an acceptable level of proficiency in speaking, writing, reading and comprehension. Take time to learn and invest time for dedicated English learning. There are many options and techniques to learn English cheaply. Many schools and tutors provide cheap learning experience to those who like to learn the basics of English.

Are there faster route of learning the English language?

In many instances Speakers of other languages besides English have great challenges when they like to use the English language practically in Speaking or Writing. When they began working in an English speaking environment, additional pressures and challenges will occur. They face difficulties in articulating their ideas with their colleagues and business audience. These  inabilities will also hinder their prospects for promotion and career advancement.

Leading a team but cannot articulate thoughts and ideas - Leadership Blunder

As a team leader, responsibilities cover management of people, the team's organization, efficiency of communication, processes, services, other business activities, results and must be in line with overall objectives of the business.

Let’s look at Michael’s experiences, who was a new Team Manager at his fast growing organization. He was recently promoted to his new role from his engineering role for the last seven years. He gained expertise in his role, demonstrated essential knowledge competencies and delivered magnificent accomplishments in performing his job. He was promoted to lead seven people with ranges of experiences from 6 months to 5 years.

In the early days of his role, it was exciting; he was having a blast, enjoying all the perks that came with it. He started planning for his vacation when he completed his first year. However, there are some things that were bothering him.

Credits: IdeasN, Microsoft.com

Michael was reflecting some of the situations that have occurred:
1. In his first day, he met with his team members. He was very confident in getting to know them, clarifying their roles and responsibilities. However, he was very nervous and felt short in explaining all the things that he wanted to accomplish. He cannot find the right words in articulating his thoughts. He decided to postpone the sharing of other information. However, as soon as he got into his office, he sent an email to his team enumerating what he wanted to share with them. He did this because of his inability to articulate his ideas when speaking.

2. During the meeting with his co-managers, he was unable to discuss and tell the entire story about his team's activities and members because the words that he wanted to use cannot be articulated. He struggled to verbalize his thoughts in front of his co-managers. He was frustrated and was very embarrassed. Others told him “don’t worry, we understand what you meant! English is not your first language.”  He believed that his inability to speak will create some issues eventually.

3. A member of his team brought to his attention an escalating issue with a customer. When speaking with customers over the telephone, he was getting frustrated for his inability to verbally express the best options that the customers can take. Instead, he was giving polite excuses by telling customers that he will email more detailed information.  Michael was finding it more and more challenging to communicate effectively.

4. Michael was meeting with four other management colleagues after work hours. He was excited about joining them as he can do bonding with them. He enjoyed their company, learning more about their thoughts and practices. But when it comes to sharing about his interests and passion such as travels, outdoor activities, and other social functions. He was limited with words. He felt embarrassed with management peers but he claimed that he was more confident in talking things with his personal friends.

What factors have contributed to the issues of Michael?

1. He lacks adequate business vocabulary and phrases to support his  ideas in front of his team

2. He lacks verbal and speaking competencies or  proficiency that will articulate his business and personal ideas
3. He lacks speaking communication skills that will make him more credible towards customers and management peers
4. He lacks conversational skills that will support his thoughts, ideas and opinions during small talks with business colleagues, peers and new acquaintances.
5. His organization did not prepare him for advance management role, nor trained him to become a team manager

What steps that Michael can do?
Because Michael is leading a team of people. He will need to acquire knowledge and skills through a program called "Advanced Business English for Effective Communication". This will give him the opportunity to develop adequate proficiency in both business leadership and communication skills. Many of the issues he faced are covered in this program; such as increasing functional vocabulary, learning techniques in conducting situational scenarios, communicative skills development, increase verbal customer relations skills, ability to talk with new acquaintances in small talks topics and ability to conduct himself as a more professional as a real manager during business meetings within or outside his organization.

Speaking with an experienced leadership trainer and coach at Ideas N Conversations will identify the real cause of his issues. The free assessment which Ideas N Conversations use in determining those difficulties will allow them to create a suitable and customized program that will eliminate his difficulties. He can use these new learning immediately after each session.

Why do organizations need to step up?
In order for the organization to become successful with their business goals. They need to assess ahead of time the capabilities of their employees. One important role is to prepare talented employees to become team leaders, show them the  ropes in leading, their responsibilities, mentoring them before they will assume the role as a full time people manager.

These are issues within many organizations. They do not invest on their people because their focus is an immediate return of revenues. When you look at the overall performance of employees, many do not meet all expected results because of inefficiencies and lack of skills, knowledge and 'know hows'.

Unique Differences between Advanced Business English and Business English

Are there differences between Advanced Business English and Business English?

Yes, there are...

Competencies in Business English are acquired by adult English speakers through experiential immersion, assimilation and practice with contextual relevance of ideas, utterances and their meanings. In this globalized business environment, English competence has become a critical skill of an individual for competitiveness within enterprises.

First, a Business English is a specialized form of the English language that illustrates functional norms of the language that relate to different businesses. In basic context, this language form generally use common business terminologies, phrases, statements and utterances that are business in nature. Employees that work in different businesses use basic business English language to portray their ideas, opinions, and experiences. Their referential use was based from either their personal family unit, they acquired from school, or from social interactions among English speakers. Many English speakers regardless of their locations struggle to demonstrate proficiency or skill in Business English. This is because the English classes they learned in school were not focused in the skills development and practice of using English within the business environment.

Second, an Advanced Business English is specially focused to a more complex use of Business English within growing, medium size or large organizations. This incorporates functional areas of businesses and action oriented results. This type of English within the business environment is required to illustrate effective communicative competence in either verbal or written. The psycho-socio-linguistic characteristics of the Advanced Business English must be demonstrated immensely among speakers because proficiency supports credibility. With strong acumen in communicating your ideas verbally, this means possibilities for advancement is open-ended.

When you  have experienced the lack of these competencies and skills, you can contact Ideas N Conversations to discuss and explore the appropriate program for you. Their expert will conduct an assessment of your current weaknesses and strengths.

Customized lessons will be based on your 'Identified Difficulties', depending on your preferred learning style modular lessons are either one-on-one coaching or in clusters and the trainer will travel to your location.

As always, we like to hear about your insights, suggestions and or comments.  To learn more additional information, please call +1 (650) 241-3207.

Non-verbal versus Verbal Language

Quiz 1:

  • How significant is Non-verbal body language compared to verbal language forms?
You are welcome to share us your insights at the space provided below ...

Perspectives:
Generally speaking, "Communication is the use of messages to produce meaning within and across a variety of contexts, cultures, methods and media" - this description was provided by Association for Communication Administration.

That description was providing us a knowledge that communication is a method or a tool that will transfer ideas and meanings through different media with another individual or groups.

People with different backgrounds in terms of culture, linguistic competencies, or perhaps natural differences demonstrate different ways in communicating their ideas and will also understand these ideas differently with meanings. Whether or not such communication was illustrated in either verbal or non-verbal.

Verbal communication requires sound forms of the language to communicate specific information. In today's technological age, there are many different forms to utilize in order to transfer those ideas verbally through various media.

On the other hand, Non-verbal communication provides a different angle of meaning when communicating an idea. Depending on the setting of the communication process, specifically country, cultural, physio-linguistics and other factors. There are ambiguities of non-verbal communication, particularly focused on who is communicating ideas and who are receiving the information that is being communicated. Body language play an important role when it comes of non-verbal communication. Are there tools of today that illustrate non-verbal communication?  Yes, there are ... it is a matter of identifying these around you. They speak louder than words and the meanings they provide are strong and equally vital.

As always, we like to hear from you.

Presenting Results-driven and Meaningful Ideas: A Competency of Efficiency and Professionalism

Am I an Information Facilitator or Business Acumen Presenter or Skills Trainer?

Don't be one of those boring, invaluable data talkers, time wasters, insensible presentation skills and behavior of many individuals who call themselves 'speakers and presenters but read their slides - page by page and word per word'.

"Learning will be optimized when presented with impactful information, driven with the right technical knowledge, competency, and experience of the user, teacher, coach, facilitator or trainer; particularly when using the 21st Century, technologically-based concepts, and useful tools for informative engaging discussions." - said Juntee Terrenal

There are three types of  'information Presenters who are professionally competent' whose skills are essential in order to accomplish their functional responsibilities in any business environment. They are the following;

Information Facilitator:
The Presenter uses PowerPoint as a tool of meaningful learning. The normal teaching or training becomes interactive when sessions impact audience' inquisitiveness and trigger reactions. Many learning environment of today, utilize presentations to share various topics that are curriculum-based to audience.

Business Acumen Presenter:
Professionals and leaders, who are empowered to share and or close business with intended audience specifically in sales oriented professions, utilize powerful tools and options like Microsoft PowerPoint. It makes it easier for people in marketing, advertising, sales, business developers, managers, leaders and other business people to incorporate their ideas, stratagems, values, services and products information.

Skills Trainer:
Today's Era is technologically driven. Using PowerPoint is an essential software tool  to incorporate action-driven and strategic perspectives that will create value-add interaction with the audience. Majority of top executives, managers of various business units, use this powerful tool and integrate communicative competence to share and communicate business information with their team members, colleagues, and or associates. Such tool will facilitate better idea, interactive and more effective learning about essential information of their business. It is the goal of every trainer to achieve results when using this tool.

"If you don't have the competency, hire a Coach and learn it with passion"

Observed Disturbing Realities among presenters of information:
1. Template reflects amateurish looks
2. Used technical features like fonts, colors, images, and animations were amateurish
3. Prepared 30 plus slides to read to the audience
4. Read the information that were written in their slides
5. Cannot discuss freely what were presented concepts in their slides
